Οι Kalfayan Galleries (Χάρητος 11, Κολωνάκι, Αθήνα) παρουσιάζουν την ατομική έκθεση της Sasha Streshna με τίτλο «Devon Loch». Τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης θα πραγματοποιηθούν την Τετάρτη, 28 Ιουνίου 2023 (19.00 – 22.00).
Στην ατομική της έκθεση στην γκαλερί Kalfayan, η Sasha Streshna παρουσιάζει μια νέα σειρά ελαιογραφιών που συνεχίζουν την έρευνά της πάνω στην παράδοση της ιστορικής δυτικής ζωγραφικής, εστιάζοντας κυρίως σε αναπαραστάσεις βίας, καταστολής και εξουσίας.
Για την νέα αυτή σειρά η Streshna αντλεί υλικό από τις εικονογραφήσεις σοβιετικών σχολικών βιβλίων ιστορίας. Συγκαλύπτοντας τα στοιχεία που θα επέτρεπαν στον θεατή να αναγνωρίσει το απεικονιζόμενο γεγονός, η Streshna μεταπλάθει τις εικόνες σε ζωγραφική γλώσσα με υπαινικτικά περιγράμματα και χρωματική παλέτα χωρίς φαινομενικά υψηλές εντάσεις. Πραγματεύεται έτσι ιστορίες εξεγέρσεων, ανυπακοής και ρήξεων περισσότερο ως ασαφείς αναμνήσεις και ψυχικά φορτία παρά ως συγκεκριμένα συμβάντα.
Ο Devon Loch, από τον οποίον παίρνει η έκθεση το όνομά της, ήταν ένα φημισμένο βρετανικό άλογο κούρσας. Στο Grand National του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, το 1956, ο Devon Loch, λίγο πριν να τερματίσει πρώτος, σταμάτησε και ξάπλωσε ακίνητος στο χώμα, αφήνοντας τα άλλα άλογα να τον προσπεράσουν. Η έκφραση to do a Devon Loch δηλώνει έκτοτε στη Βρετανία την απρόσμενη αποτυχία μπροστά στο ενδεχόμενο της νίκης. Αν και σε πρώτο επίπεδο, ο τίτλος αυτός υπαινίσσεται μια αδυναμία τόσο της ζωγραφικής όσο και της πολιτικής πράξης να κατανοήσουν και να μεταπλάσουν τον κόσμο, ωστόσο αφήνει να εννοηθεί πως η ανυπακοή είναι πάντα μια από τις ύψιστες εκφράσεις αυτοδιάθεσης και ελεύθερης βούλησης. Η ασαφής ανάμνηση είναι συγχρόνως και ένα ανοιχτό ενδεχόμενο για το μέλλον.
Σύντομο βιογραφικό:
Η Sasha Streshna γεννήθηκε το 1987 στο Λβίβ, Ουκρανική ΣΣΔ και από το 1999 μένει στην Αθήνα. Είναι απόφοιτη της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών Αθήνας και έχει ολοκληρώσει μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Central Saint Martins στο Λονδίνο. ‘Εχει λάβει το Έπαθλο Γιάννη Σπυρόπουλου (2016) και το βραβείο ARTWORKS του Ιδρύματος Σταύρος Νιάρχος (2019/2020).

27 Ιουνίου – 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2023: H καλλιτέχνης συμμετέχει στην ομαδική έκθεση που διοργανώνει ο ΟΠΑΝΔΑ με τίτλο «ENCORE: Νέα ελληνική ζωγραφική» στην Πινακοθήκη του Δήμου Αθηναίων, σε επιμέλεια Ελένης Κούκου, Χριστόφορου Μαρίνου και Θεόφιλου Τραμπούλη.

Kalfayan Galleries present the solo exhibition of Sasha Streshna titled “Devon Loch”. The opening will take place on Wednesday, 28 June 2023 (19.00 – 22.00).
In her solo exhibition at Kalfayan Galleries, Sasha Streshna presents a new series of oil paintings which continues her research on western history painting tradition, focusing primarily on depictions of violence, repression and authority.
In her new series, Streshna references found images from soviet textbooks. While obscuring the evidence that would allow the viewer to recognise an event, Streshna converts the illustrations through a painting language that entails suggestive contours and a colour pallet with no apparent contrasts. Hence, the stories of rebellions are explored as incoherent and emotionally charged memories, rather than particular events.
The title of the exhibition “Devon Loch” refers to the name of a famous royal racehorse, which fell - for no apparent reason - on the final straight just as it was about to finish first in the 1956 UK Grand National. The phrase to do a Devon Loch is still used to explain a sudden, last-minute failure of someone who was expected to win. Although, at first glance, the title suggests failure to comprehend and reshape the world of both painting and the political act, at the same time it also implies that insubordination is one of the most remarkable expressions of self-determination and free will. An incoherent memory, therefore, holds the potential to become a future possibility.
Short biography:
Sasha Streshna was born in 1987 in Lviv, Soviet Ukraine and she has been living in Athens since 1999. She is a graduate of Athens School of Fine Arts and has obtained a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins, London. She is a recipient of the Jannis Spyropoulos Award (2016) and the ARTWORKS Stavros Niarchos Artist Fellowship (2019/2020).
